Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

How Ayurveda Helps In Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOS/PCOD)?

Oct 14, 2017

Fariah was 25 and had been married for three years. At 5 feet 2 inches, she weighed 76 kgs (clearly overweight for her height.) She showed all the classical signs and symptoms of PCOS facial hair, hair loss, acne, elevated blood sugar levels, digestive disorders like flatulence and bloating, and irregular periods. Her ultrasound examination showed polycystic ovaries. She also had slightly elevated levels of thyroid hormones. She had been trying to conceive unsuccessfully for the past three years. During this time, she had approached numerous fertility clinics.

A friend of hers referred her to me. Based on her symptoms and her lab reports, I diagnosed her of PCOS. Before staring with PCOS treatment in Ayurveda, my initial advice to her was simple: If she wanted to conceive, she should address her PCOS first. I prescribed her the most effective Ayurvedic herbs for treating hormonal imbalance and for boosting fertility. I also put her on a strict diet and exercise regimen.

Fariah, who loved junk food and had an erratic lifestyle, now ate a strict diet that was low on carbohydrates and high on proteins. I also asked her to restrict her consumption of red meat, sweets, eggs and deep fried foods. In addition, I advised her to brisk walk for 60 minutes every day.

Within a month of starting her PCOS treatment in ayurveda, Fariah started noticing an improvement in her symptoms. She had lost 4 kgs, had not experienced any spotting, and got her first period after more than 2 months. Her hair loss reduced by almost 20%. Within another month, she lost another 3 kgs and her facial hair started to disappear. Her bowel movements had normalized, and her hair loss had reduced by 50%.

In the third month of her treatment, she lost an additional 3 kgs (10 kgs in total) and her facial hair had disappeared completely. Her digestion was in top shape. Her ultrasound showed no cysts and her thyroid function test was normal. Her sugar levels were well below borderline values.

Once her PCOS symptoms were addressed, Fariah could experience the joy of motherhood. She is also very happy with her improved looks and regular periods.

Fariah is not the only one has seen success with PCOS treatment in Ayurveda. In nearly 25 years of my career as an ayurvedic practitioner, I have seen several other women with PCOS benefit from holistic treatment, without experiencing the side effects of allopathic medicines prescribed for the condition.

Let me share the causes of PCOS from an ayurvedic point of view, and commonly prescribed herbs for PCOS treatment in Ayurveda.

The Ayurvedic View Of PCOS

What Causes PCOS According to Ayurveda?

Ayurveda believes that three ‘doshas’ or forces of energy – vatta, pitta and kapha – circulate in the body and facilitate important bodily functions. In healthy individuals, all three doshas are in perfect harmony. According to Ayurveda, any imbalance in the three forces of energies can lead to diseases.

Ayurvedic texts mention the presence of shukra dhatu (semen) in both men and women. Shukra dhatu plays a vital role in maintaining the health of the reproductive system.Shukra dhatu can be considered as a combination of androgen (male hormone) and estrogen (female hormone). Any imbalance in Shukra dhatu can cause infertility.

An imbalance in the doshas can affect the efficieny of the Shukra dhatu. When “doshas” affect the efficiency of the Shukra dhatu in women, it leads to excess production of male hormones and other symptoms of PCOS such as the appearance of cysts in the ovaries.

PCOS treatment in ayurveda, just like any other ayurvedic treatment, focuses on correcting the imbalance of the doshas or forces of energy.
